The Witcher 3 Gwent Game is a great one on one card game. Inspired by the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski, the CD Projekt Red classic game spinoff has become a fan favorite. In the game, the main character, Geralt of Rivia, finds many opportunities to play Gwent. After you learn this game, you are going to do the same.

You can collect Gwent cards while playing The Witcher 3, and use those cards to play Gwent matches with other opponents. We will help you figure out what cards you have, which Gwent Cards you are missing, and give a full list of Gwent cards. We’ll also help you out with some of the quests, for the best Gwent cards.

If you are wondering how to play Gwent, or looking for Gwent card locations, we have you covered. You can also play Gwent online, here, outside of the Witcher games.

How to Play Gwent

For some background information before you get going, here is how to play Gwent. Below you will find a short list, bulleted for easy reading. We have also included a few tutorial videos for the visual learners in the room.

The basics of Gwent:

  • Each Gwent deck must contain a minimum of 22 Unit cards
  • Each game contains three rounds
  • A round is won by having more total points than your opponent when the round is over
  • The first player to win two rounds wins the game

Gwent Gameplay:

  • Each game begins with a coin toss, then both players draw a random ten cards from their deck.
  • If a player wishes to discard up to two cards from their hand, and redraw in the hopes of a stronger card, they may at this time. You usually only redraw one time per round.
  • Each player may then play a Unit Card in the combat row.
  • Only one card is played on the combat row, unless there is an ability on a card allowing for more. To raise your cards power, though, you can play a weather card also.
  • To score, you use the differing amounts of strength points on your cards. The total of those points is your total score. If your score is higher than your opponents at the end of the round, you win.
  • The round ends when both players have no more cards to play. Or, if one player passes their turn to the other while the other has more points.

If all that was clear as mud, here are a few video tutorials on how to play:

Witcher 3 Gwent Cards

It can be really difficult to just find a simple checklist of cards. Below, you will find a list of 195 Gwent Cards (there are at least 250 with downloadable content — DLCs). Thanks to GwentCards.com for this great checklist. There is also a complete spreadsheet of Gwent cards, locations, quests and characters in the “Gwent Card Locations” section, below. And, more cards are coming, like the “She-Troll of Vergen – new premium card coming to GWENT soon!” announced just a few months ago.

We’ve arranged the most popular decks, and all their cards, below:

Witcher 3 Quests to Earn Gwent Cards

We’ll walk you through the quests to get the Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer cards below.

Playing Innkeepers: How to Get the Yennefer Card

Sweet! Just won this #yennefer #gwent card off an innkeeper. #thewitcher3 #gwentcards

A post shared by Warren Smith (@mistersmithmachine) on

You don’t have to wait long to begin this quest. Actually, it is one of the first Quest in the game. Despite the early hour in your gameplay, these are some pretty awesome cards. Start in the city of Oxenfurt and seek out the Innkeeper Stjepan in The Alchemy Inn.

Below, listed as “Character to Play — Location — Card Awarded,” are the players in this quest:

  • Stejpan — the Alchemy Inn (Oxenfurt) — Yennefer of Vengenberg
  • Oliver — the Kingfisher Inn (Novigrad) — Tibor Eggebracht
  • The Innkeeper — the Inn at the Crossroads (Velen) — Menno Coehhoorn

Big City Players: How to Get the Ciri Card

When you find yourself in the seedy, funloving Novigrad, you will find a wealth of Gwent players. Completing the Big City Players quest will earn that powerhouse that is the coveted Ciri Gwent card. To Begin this quest, find the notice board in Heirarch Square in Novigrad. When you find the notice calling Vimme Vivaldi a Gwent trickster, or talk to Vimme at the Vivaldi bank in the same square, it begins.

You will have to play the following players in this quest to win Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Ciri, for short).

Listed below, as “Character to Play — Location Found — Card Awarded”:

  • Vimme Vivaldi — at the Vivaldi Bank — Vesemir
  • Marquise Serenity — The Passiflora in Novigrad — Morvran Voorhis
  • Sigismund Dijkstra — the bathhouse in Novigrad — Esterad Thyssen
  • Scoia’Tael Trader — camp in the Novigrad Forest — Cirilla Fiona Elen Rianno

If your quest comes to an end before you’ve played all the games, don’t worry. It simply means that character has not been “met” yet. When you find them, you’ll get an option to play Gwent with them in the dialogue.

Old Pals Quest: How to Get the Geralt Card

The quest to win Geralt’s card is pretty apropos, actually. You have to play all his old pals from the games. If you win, and keep winning, you will take home the card and the bragging rights.

Listed below are the NPC (Non-player characters) you will have to play to win this card.

“Character to Play — Location Found — Card Awarded”:

  • Zoltan Chivay — the Rosemary and Thyme in Novigrad — Eithnè
  • Vernon Roche — the Temerian Resistance Camp in Velen — Saskia Saesenthessis
  • Lambert (when you get a chance) — Novigrad or Kaer Morhen — Triss Merigold
  • Thaler — a Troll’s Cave or, the Seven Cats Inn — Geralt of Rivia

Video Walkthrough of how to win Geralt of Rivia Gwent Card:

Gwent is a great game, born of an even greater game. The Witcher 3 storyline has 10 years of staying power behind it and growth ahead. As that line grows, it would follow that Gwent will just keep growing too. Try it today, you’ll be glad you did.
