Game of Thrones has taken the world by storm. Featuring tales of love, hate, and an undying lust for power, GoT has it all. If you are hooked on Game of Thrones and just can’t get enough, here is everything you need to know while you wait for Game of Thrones Season 8 to be released.
Game of Thrones was originally a book series written by George R. R. Martin. The book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, was then turned into the GoT television show by HBO. Instantly, the show became a fan favorite with a loyal following. The GoT television series eventually passed up the books and the show had to take over the storyline where the books had left off.
It should be noted though that although the show is based on the books, the plots do differ significantly at some points. Just because a character is alive in the books, doesn’t mean they are alive on the show, and vice versa. But if there is one thing both the books and the show are known for, it is killing off main characters when fans least expect it. In the GoT world, no one is safe. Ever.
Game of Thrones Plot in a Nutshell
If you have never watched Game of Thrones or are not up to date, consider this fair warning that there may be spoilers contained below. GoT chronicles the lives of those who live in Martin’s fantasy world, which centers around the continents of Westeros and Essos. To fully explore the various plotlines of this show would take far more than just one article, and besides, Martin and HBO do a much better job at this than I ever could. After all, that is the very reason GoT is so successful in the first place.
But if you are looking for a brief overview of the plot, check out the video below, which covers the shows first six seasons. (As a bonus, the video is narrated by none other than Samuel L. Jackson.)
Game of Thrones Fandom
Fans have gone absolutely bonkers for GoT since the very first season and seven seasons later, the show is still going strong. Many critics are calling Martin a modern-day Tolkien and for good reason. His epic fantasy novels and the television series it spawned have found a loyal fan base. Knights in shining armor, murderous kings and queens, plus dragons have made GoT a hit in every sense of the word.
“People are going to be stealing and borrowing bits from Game of Thrones for years and years,” said Maureen Ryan, resident television critic at Variety. “I think it’ll be hard to create a show as widely seen and talked about but that won’t stop people trying. We’ve already had a host of shows with bearded guys fighting with swords. A lot of them have been either mediocre or terrible, but I would assume [we’ll get] beardy sword fights for some time to come.”
“The biggest strength of Game of Thrones was always its characters,” Ryan added. “The show’s success has definitely led some networks to take the wrong risks; to think that if a show is derived from a popular series of books or comic books then it’s bound to be a big hit. Well, nope! It’s the same thing that happened with Lost, the idea that if you shoved a lot of actors in a genre-ish show with a complicated mythology then that was enough. But that’s not why people liked Lost or Game of Thrones.”
Fans have made GoT a full-on phenomenon both on and off the screen. This has lead to fan theories about the show, must-have collectibles, and some of the best memes on the internet.
Game of Thrones Theories
GoT has spawned a plethora of fan theories. Here are three of the most popular Game of Thrones theories floating around the internet:
GoT Theory #1:
The most well-known of these Game of Thrones theories is the R+L=J theory. According to this theory, Jon Snow is the child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. This not only means that Jon is not Ned Stark’s bastard but instead he is both a Stark and a Targaryen. This lends credence to the belief that he is the Prince that was Promised and is destined to defeat the Night King. This also gives him a firm claim to the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones fandom has been buzzing about this theory for years now and in the last season to air. The fans who believed in this theory were finally vindicated when the R=L=J theory was confirmed on the show at the end of Season 7.
GoT Theory #2:
Similar to the R+L=J theory is the A+J=T theory. According to this fan theory, Tyrion Lannister is actually a Targaryen as well. The A+J=T theory asserts that Tyrion is actually the bastard son of Tywin Lannister’s wife, Joanna, and the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen.
GoT Theory #3:
Another popular fan theory is that Bran Stark is actually the Night King.
Game of Thrones Collectibles
You know what they say. Where there are fans, there are collectibles. Well, even if they don’t say that, it’s undeniably true. GoT is no exception to this rule. Here are a few of the most popular Games of Thrones Collectibles on the market.
