With The Princess Bride turning 30 in September 2017, people are falling in love all over again with this tale of adventure and true love.

This story takes a tongue-in-cheek look at pirates, giants, epic sword battles, fire swamps, rodents of unusual size, and of course, kissing. Buttercup is a farm girl who falls in love with Westley, her put-upon stable boy. When Westley goes off to seek his fortune and fails to return, Buttercup agrees to marry the local prince. When Westley finally returns having won his fortune as The Dread Pirate Roberts, he must foil the evil prince’s plan to use Buttercup and a staged abduction as an excuse to launch a war against a neighboring country.

The Princess Bride stars Robin Wright and Cary Elwes as Buttercup and Westley, along with Mandy Patinkin as the determined swordsman Inigo Montoya. Also featured is Andre the Giant, as Montoya’s boon companion, and Wallace Shawn as their ne’er do well employer. Other actors include Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Peter Falk, and Fred Savage. The Princess Bride was produced by Oscar-nominated director Rob Reiner. The screenplay was written by William Goldman, from his book.

For fans of the movie who have never read the book, a trip to the ‘quotes’ section of Goodreads is essential. The movie was stuffed with so many great lines, it’s hard to believe there were more in the book than made it into the film script. But there were:

“Enough about my beauty. Everybody always talks about how beautiful I am. I’ve got a mind, Westley. Talk about that.” ― Buttercup

If you’re looking for romantic quotes from The Princess Bride, try wedding website, The Knot for the most swoon-worthy.

“I love you. I know this must come as something of a surprise, since all I’ve ever done is scorn you and degrade you and taunt you, but I have loved you for several hours now, and every second, more.” ― Buttercup

Everybody loves a meme, but Princess Bride memes are multipurpose. Like quotes, fans have repurposed them through the years to comment on contemporary culture, politics, and modern love.
